The first ship of the Type 055 destroyer was named Nanchang with hull number 101, reflecting the importance attached by the Chinese Navy. In the sequence of Chinese warships, hull number 101 has a special significance. It was once the hull number of the flagship and flagship of the new Chinese Navy's destroyer force, the Anshan destroyer. After crossing half a century, the first ship of the Type 055 destroyer was reactivated with the 101st hull number and named after the revolutionary holy land of Nanchang, indicating that the ship is the "leading ship" among all destroyers of the Chinese Navy.
